Steve McCurry – BEYOND SIGHT

18 April – 20 September 2015 Teatro1, Cinecittà si Mostra, Via Tuscolana 1055, Rome. Italy

The first meeting between Steve McCurry and Cinecittà took place few years ago and was immediately ‘love at first sight’. In the city of cinema his lens captured new suggestions among sets and wharehouses enriching his research of a surreal character. Known throughout the world for his superb portraits and reportages realized in some of the most difficult countries in the world, McCurry had indeed directed his sensitivity in other perspectives, expanding the horizon of his research into an almost metaphysical dimension of the space and the humanity that crosses it or suspends it with its absence.

02_weborig_main

The exhibition features over 150 images: with 50 photos of the most classic and famous, are the most recent works of the photographer, including several unreleased concerning “an unusual and unstructured search, which goes beyond the look, crossing doors and windows to tell the space and the light, in order to win the pain and fear, “explains the curator Biba Jackets.
In addition to photographs, the exhibition you can find six video where McCurry tells his travels and his way of conceiving the photography.

06_weborig_main

Since the first Italian exhibition, held in Milan in 2009, Civita and Sudest57 have been leading McCurry in a long term exhibition project, realizing other exhibitions that have already gathered more than 600,000 visitors and have offered to the general public the chance to discover his extraordinary photographic production, expanding each time the knowledge of his vast repertoire, staged in various contexts with new and suggestive displays.

Bruce Davidson Time of Change: 1961-1965Bruce Davidson Time of Change: 1961-1965

BDA14-14

The Robert Koch Gallery is holding an exhibition of Davidson’s earlier work from between 1961 and 1965, the “Time of Change,” which marked the end of segregation. While Time of Change is hopeful, Harlem, East 100th Street asks, “What changet?” During those years, Bruce Davidson documented history as it happened, including Martin Luther King’s famous march in Montgomery, Alabama, where he appears surrounded by a crowd, their arms locked together, and the American flag flying behind them. The image is so iconic that one of its variations was exhibited at Paris Photo in a different (gigantic) format and at the Rolf Art gallery covered with hand-written captions by the Argentinian artist Marcelo Brodsky.

BDA14-20

The Robert Koch gallery made selections from Davidson’s series, including social scenes, gatherings and arrests, but above all the living conditions, the uncertainty of a woman in her 40s leaning on her elbow at the window, a marcher being accosted by police, the scorn in certain looks, the excitement in others, the mouths wide open in surprise, the power of the contrasting blacks and whites when these two colors are at the heart of the protests. “I’m not interested in the history of art, but in the art of history. I see photography as a cultural good,” said Davidson in 2010 interview with Marco Bischof, shortly after the publication of Outside Inside (Steidl), a three-volume collection of 800 photographs covering Davidson’s fifty-year career.

titolo

Spazio Oberdan 140 photographs of one of the great humanists of 900 photographers, portrait artist and reporter
from February 12 to April 6, 2014

Born in Marijampole in Lithuania, in Tsarist Russia, Izis Bidermanas (1911-1980) runs away in the thirties from the misery of his land to get to the ‘Paris of dreams’, the capital of the painters and the Impressionists. From here, during the war, he is forced to take refuge with his family in the Limousin region.

After the liberation of Limoges, in ’44 he enlisted in the French Forces of the Interior (FFI), fascinated by the young people of the Resistance, which produces extraordinary photographic portraits. After the war he returned to Paris, where he continued his work as a portrait photographing artists, poets, writers and painters who enliven the cultural life of the city. In 1953 he published the book “Paradise on Earth”, made with Colette, where his shots translate into images the words of the writer, which describes the places you loved to go before being immobilized by the disease, such as Desert de Retz or garden Zoological Clères.

From 1949 he began to work for Paris Matchcollaborating from the first issue as a specialist in portrait, and remains in the magazine for twenty years, revealing a reporter atypical anti-event, photographer of those most unlikely. At that time his photographs date back to the work of Marc Chagall, rare examples of his precious ability to be able to capture the mood and the inspiration that move artists during creation. In 1969, devotes an entire opera, “Le Monde de Chagall”, his painter friend.

And ‘especially, however, the’ dream ‘of Paris Izis not stop looking at his photographs, one of the neighborhoods, the banks of the Seine and fairs. In the three works “Paris des Rêves” (1950), “Grand Bal du printemps” (1951) and “Paris des poètes” (1977), outlines the image of an eternal city and ahistorical.

In 1952 he published “Charmes de Londres”, the result of his escape to England with Jacques Prévert and the following year “The Queen’s People,” sull’incoronazione of Queen Elizabeth II. In 1955 he produced “Israël” and ten years later “Le Cirque d’Izis,” the best work of his extensive bibliography, which reveals his passion for the circus world.

izis-bidermanas91
