Born in Marijampole in Lithuania, in Tsarist Russia, Izis Bidermanas (1911-1980) runs away in the thirties from the misery of his land to get to the ‘Paris of dreams’, the capital of the painters and the Impressionists. From here, during the war, he is forced to take refuge with his family in the Limousin region.
After the liberation of Limoges, in ’44 he enlisted in the French Forces of the Interior (FFI), fascinated by the young people of the Resistance, which produces extraordinary photographic portraits. After the war he returned to Paris, where he continued his work as a portrait photographing artists, poets, writers and painters who enliven the cultural life of the city. In 1953 he published the book “Paradise on Earth”, made with Colette, where his shots translate into images the words of the writer, which describes the places you loved to go before being immobilized by the disease, such as Desert de Retz or garden Zoological Clères.
From 1949 he began to work for Paris Matchcollaborating from the first issue as a specialist in portrait, and remains in the magazine for twenty years, revealing a reporter atypical anti-event, photographer of those most unlikely. At that time his photographs date back to the work of Marc Chagall, rare examples of his precious ability to be able to capture the mood and the inspiration that move artists during creation. In 1969, devotes an entire opera, “Le Monde de Chagall”, his painter friend.
And ‘especially, however, the’ dream ‘of Paris Izis not stop looking at his photographs, one of the neighborhoods, the banks of the Seine and fairs. In the three works “Paris des Rêves” (1950), “Grand Bal du printemps” (1951) and “Paris des poètes” (1977), outlines the image of an eternal city and ahistorical.
In 1952 he published “Charmes de Londres”, the result of his escape to England with Jacques Prévert and the following year “The Queen’s People,” sull’incoronazione of Queen Elizabeth II. In 1955 he produced “Israël” and ten years later “Le Cirque d’Izis,” the best work of his extensive bibliography, which reveals his passion for the circus world.

Nato a Marijampole in Lituania, nella Russia zarista, Izis Bidermanas (1911-1980) scappa negli Anni Trenta dalla miseria della sua terra per raggiungere la ‘Parigi dei sogni’, capitale dei pittori e degli Impressionisti. Da qui, durante la guerra, è costretto a rifugiarsi con la famiglia nella regione del Limousin. Dopo la liberazione di Limoges, nel ‘44 si arruola nelle Forze Francesi dell’Interno (FFI), affascinato dai giovani della Resistenza, dei quali realizza straordinari ritratti fotografici.
Finita la guerra ritorna a Parigi, dove prosegue la sua attività di ritrattista fotografando artisti, poeti, scrittori e pittori che animano la vita culturale della città. Nel 1953 pubblica il libro “Paradiso terrestre”, realizzato con Colette, in cui i suoi scatti traducono in immagini le parole della scrittrice, la quale descrive i luoghi che amava frequentare prima di essere immobilizzata dalla malattia, come i Désert de Retz o il giardino zoologico di Clères.
Dal 1949 inizia a lavorare per Paris Match, collaborando fin dal primo numero come specialista del ritratto, e rimane nella rivista per vent’anni, rivelandosi un reporter atipico, dell’anti-avvenimento, fotografo dei soggetti più improbabili. A quel periodo risalgono le sue fotografie di Marc Chagall al lavoro, rare testimonianze della sua preziosa capacità di riuscire a cogliere l’animo e l’ispirazione che muovono gli artisti durante la creazione. Nel 1969 dedica un’intera opera, “Le Monde de Chagall”, all’amico pittore.
E’ soprattutto, però, il ‘sogno’ di Parigi che Izis non smette di cercare nelle sue fotografie, tra i quartieri popolari, le rive della Senna e le fiere. Nelle tre opere “Paris des revês” (1950), “Grand Bal du printemps” (1951) e “Paris des poètes” (1977), delinea l’immagine di una città eterna e astorica.
Nel 1952 pubblica “Charmes de Londres”, frutto della sua fuga in Inghilterra con Jacques Prévert e l’anno successivo “The Queen’s People”, sull’incoronazione della Regina Elisabetta II. Nel 1955 realizza “Israël” e dieci anni più tardi “Le Cirque d’Izis”, la migliore opera della sua ricca bibliografia, che rivela la sua passione per il mondo circense.
